Do you need an instructor?🎹
⠀
It is wonderful that you decided to start piano lessons. Now, the question is: do you need an instructor?
⠀
It’s a very valid question, as nowadays we can go online and learn almost anything with the one click.
There are many great online courses out there; many awesome free lessons are posted online, and there are knowledgeable people to learn from.
⠀
If you asked me personally if you need an instructor, this would be my answer: it honestly depends on your goals.
Do you want to learn how to read sheet music or surprise someone with their favorite song at their birthday or wedding? Then, you can definitely find a lesson or two online that will teach you just that.
⠀
Will those lessons necessarily help you improve your sight-reading skills, however? For that, you definitely need time and help of an experienced instructor.
⠀
If you have long term goals, such as to develop, improve and evolve as a musician, you must work with an experienced instructor.
⠀
🎹Specifically, an instructor who will:
- Will use an individual approach with each and every student.
- Will listen to the student’s goals, aspirations and ask for feedback (!).
- Will help the student reach his or her goals faster
- Will make the process fun
- Will tailor training to the goals of the student:
- Sight-reading
- Understanding of music theory and chords
- Composition and songwriting
- Learning how to play favorite songs by ear (ear training)
- Technique
- Educate about music/ classical/ modern
So if you make the decision to follow your dream and learn music, make sure you find an instructor who listens to you and incorporates your goals into his or her teaching while navigating you around the world of music. 🎶
