How much should you practice every day?
⠀
This is one of the most frequently asked questions, coming from both, my adult students and parents of the kids.
⠀
Let me start off by saying: it is very important to find time for practice between the lessons.
⠀
Here is a response to my adult students, especially:
⠀
Often I hear from my adult students that they feel tired in the evening and find it hard to commit an hour to piano practice after work.
⠀
Here is my advice: do not expect to practice an hour everytime you play the piano. If you have 5, 10, 15 or 20 minutes – just go and play.
⠀
Learn how to plan your practice. Starting to journal, in addition to referring to the notebook where the teacher makes notes, can be super useful.
⠀
Most of my students work on their exercises, theory, chord progression, composition and their classical pieces/songs.
⠀
So, if say, you have 15 minutes of free time, here’s a breakout you can try:
- Play exercises for 5 minutes (Hanon or Scales)
- Practice your chords for 5 minutes (I love the Chord Crush book by Meredee Winters)
- Play a line or two from one of your current pieces or play one or two measures (3-5 times in a row) that you’ve been challenged with.
Focus for all the 15 minutes.
⠀
On days when you feel too tired to have a structured practice, just review a few songs you’ve learnt in the past.
⠀
Remember, to enjoy the process, have fun, and that some practice time, even just 15 minutes, is way better than no practice time.
