Teaching preschoolers
⠀
I love working with students of all ages. And I absolutely love working with the younger kids.
⠀
My youngest students are 4 and 5 years old. What do I like the most about working with them? Well, first of all, they are irresistibly cute and sweet. I also love the fact, that they are open to new knowledge and thought- an approach which I believe to be crucially important.
⠀
🎹Here is some advice/tips on teaching younger students:
- First and foremost, you must love kids. You gotta love talking to them, interacting with them, seek to understand them and be around them. For me, they are my favorite people, and I can be around them 24/7
- You have to be patient with kids. Overall, if you are not patient, teaching might not be for you.
- Make your lessons fun. Start with a game, end with a game and, maybe, sneak some games in-between.
- Give them time to figure it out. Ask a question and give them time to figure it out-don’t rush them
- Be positive. Make jokes. Kids looooove jokes!
- Do your research: find fun books. When I was growing up, all the books were black and white -in all the ways possible: no fun illustrations, no color-straight to the point.
- Give your students creative assignments.
- Educate yourself about psychology and child development and learn how to provide emotional comfort for your students during each lesson.
- Create a safe environment for your students to help them to evolve and grow as a person and a musician
- Be your students’ main cheerleader and remember that the process of learning is 50 percent your responsibility and effort!
- Explain your students how to practice, but don’t expect them to commit as much time for their practice, as your older students.
- Ask your students about their favorite songs and help them to learn to play their favorite tunes as soon as possible.
- Always reward your young students – with stickers or a little party favor. All my students get very excited when they feel rewarded
- Show your students appreciation.
- Celebrate little victories. Let your students know about their progress and how proud you are as a teacher.
- Teach young kids only if you enjoy it. I started with it and I want to finish with it. Enjoy the process and help your young students to grow their love for music
Above all, please remember, you are introducing these little folks to the world of music, and your approach might really affect their attitude towards learning and their love for music.
