I am a big believer in learning something new and not being afraid of it.
It seems like more and more people are growing open to the idea of lifelong learning..
I meet 30-40-50-60 year old people that come to me and ask if they can make their dream of playing the piano happen. My answer is always, “yes, you can absolutely learn and go as far as you want in the learning process”
⠀
So what prevents some adults from progressing as fast as children in learning a new skill?
⠀
After teaching over the past 16 years, I have a pretty good idea about the answer to this question.
It’s NOT about a lack of time or commitment;
it’s not about cognitive abilities; it’s not the size and length of fingers (this is my personally favorite one) or about having a perfect hearing.
⠀
It’s about FEAR.
Fear of failing.
Fear of making a mistake.
Fear of being laughed at.
Fear of not progressing as fast as they are expected to or accustomed to progress (is there even such a thing? Oh yes, trust me, it is… and unfortunately, a lot of us experienced that pressure growing up)
Fear of not ever getting to the level they dream about
⠀
I can go on and on; in my view and experience, there is just one defining factor that helps kids learn better (with right guidance and a patient and understanding teacher by their side): it is absence of fear to make a mistake.
⠀
So can that be fixed? I believe yes!! For all the adults who are starting their journey, here are a few suggestions:
⠀
️Be kind to yourself.
⠀
No, listen to me: BE KIND TO YOURSELF.
Trust the process and look at it from this angle: it is a completely new activity, Studies show that music stimulates the brain in a way no other activity does. So your brain needs time to adjust to this new activity.
⠀
️Be patient with yourself
⠀
Don’t be afraid of making a mistake, because that’s how we learn. Just remember young toddlers making their first steps: they fall, yet they keep coming up and trying to walk.
⠀
️Set up real goals and expectations.
⠀
Discuss them with your teacher. Here is a very important moment: if you come for the first lesson, and teacher tells you where she/he can take you in 6 months, it’s their plan and it doesn’t mean that it will happen. You might go further than they expect you to, or you might not be even close and IT’S OKAY. First of all, no one can tell you where you will be in 6 months after the first meeting because teachers need to learn more about you and your learning pace to be able to predict the pace of your progress. Set up goals and ask your teacher how can you get there.
⠀
️Enjoy the process.
⠀
It’s not a competition or a race. Just enjoy the learning process. Practice, Play and listen to the music; ask your teacher questions and provide your feedback. You CAN do it!
⠀
I am proud of you for getting on this beautiful journey to the world of music. There is no magic wand, no silver bullet. To get the result you want, you need to work on it.
⠀
Please keep dreaming and enjoying this journey along the way.️
